hobby horse blog hop #3

Here are the rules:
Answer one or all of the prompts. Link back to Living a Dream's post. Visit other blogs. And don't forget to ask a question of everyone else!

1. You are the lucky winner of the "Extreme Barn Makeover"! Lucky you! What things are on top of your list to be remade, changed or upgraded? (Sorry, this makeover does not entirely replace barns and/or add indoor arenas!)
Yay! Fun! First I want to say that I really like my barn. It has beautiful stalls and pastures (when it stops raining) and excellent lighting. The indoor arena is big and well lit, too. It is a clean barn, except for the usual barn clutter. The aisle is wide and it has a groom stall and a wash stall.
But what I would do first is add a bathroom! I can't even begin to tell you the troubles I almost get into having to go in the stalls. The second thing would be to add pea gravel or some other footing to the pasture gate areas and paths to the pastures. Right now they are a muddy mess from all the rain. And taking horses to the pastures is literally boot-sucking. As a frill, I would enjoy a heated and cooled observation room. We have the area for one, it is just not done, which is the same with the bathroom. And to top it off, a bigger tack room, with heat! I noticed that everything I would want would be for humans! Our horses are well taken care of and get all the good stuff.

2. Why do you treasure a particular piece of tack or equipment?
I don't have much tack. . .yet. I don't think I treasure anything I own. A good lot of my stuff is borrowed. I do really like my saddle and harness.

3. What is the best day of the week for you?
Probably Saturdays. I do not have to work and I can spend the day at the barn enjoying the horses.

My question: Mares or geldings? Why?

  1. Yes, it sounds like your barn is ideal for the animals. I second the bathroom - I have done my share of peeing in stalls and in a bucket in my trailer, however!

Great question! I have only owned one mare, and based on what I've heard from other folks, she was very level headed when she was in season. Many times I could hardly tell. Based on my experience, then, I'd have to say either. The plus to the mare is that if she is of breeding quality you could end up with a twofer!

  2. I wish I had an awesome indoor. Or an all weather outdoor would do just fine.
I'd like to answer your question even tho I am not doing the hobby horse thing bc I have a different view then most. I like mares. Sometimes more then gelding. I like how stubborn they are. How they are always feisty and I think from personal experiences that they have more drive. I rather take a tired mare into a show ring knowing she will do her job then a tired gelding. And the being in heat, squealing, mare mood doesn't normally bother me much. But that is just my opinion. I do love a few geldings to death. But most are just far to laid back for me.

  3. If I didn't have my horses at home I would totally have to have a bathroom in the barn lol.

Geldings!! 100% without a doubt, geldings! I've never met a mare like what Dreaming described. All of the mares I've met/owned are bratty and love to pick a fight. Unfortunately as a teen I was hotheaded so I wanted to fight back lol. I just don't enjoy their mood changes. I guess we're too much alike to get along LOL! So yeah, a nice, loving, confident gelding who is the same horse day in and day out is perfect for me. :D

  4. Saturday is sure a popular day. Your barn sounds wonderful. A bathroom would be the perfect addition.

    Mares or gelding?
I know geldings generally have a better reputation than mares. I owned a wonderful, sweet gelding when I was younger. I've had good experiences with several mares. And my worst experience was with a gelding. Currently, the two mares I have here are both sweethearts. It depends on the individual. I seem to be partial to mares. Ideally, I think I would like one of each in my barn.
