hobby horse blog hop #7

Here are the rules:
Answer one or all of the prompts. Link back to Living a Dream's post. Visit other blogs. And don't forget to ask a question of everyone else!

1. I was so embarrassed when. . .
Hmmm. . .this is hard for me. I am not embarrassed too easily, and I too often just laugh at myself. I guess the most embarrassing moment so far would be when I dismounted from Shy and my bra got hooked on the saddle horn, ripped, and my boob popped out of my bra. It was funny, though!

2. What did your horse (dog, husband, cat, bird, kid) do recently that 'made your day'?
Well, one of my dogs, Maggie, pretty much makes my day every time I walk through my front door. She makes me feel like a celebrity! But Shyloh has really been making my day lately. After the bolt, I was really worried about her being ridden, but she has been awesome! And she has really taken to dressage (even if it is not my preferred style, it is a good basis for her).

3. Do you use sheets on your horse(s) during the summer?
I did not use any last summer. I do not see myself using one this summer either. I do use a fly mask for Shy.

My question: What have you found to be the most effective fly spray? Is it commercial or your own concoction?

  1. At least you have a sense of humor about it. At that point, there's nothing left to do but laugh.

We use whichever fly spray our vet says is working that year. He's pretty good about knowing what's going to work year in and year out - but it's never the same and he's always been right. We try to keep our flies under control with Fly Predators. We use them and the livery across the street uses them. Once the livery started using them, we saw a marked decrease in flies (but you can certainly tell when they've gone too long without scooping, because the poor predators can't keep up).

    1. So, I am wondering what fly spray your vet recommends this year??

  2. Well, that's an argument for going braless!
Thanks for reminding me about the fly masks. I need to get them, at least for trailering.
All I know is that sprays that claim they last 14 days don't!
Gun Diva's response is interesting... I never thought about checking with the vet or the fact that some years one spray would be more effective than another.

  3. If you didn't have a sense of humor that would be horrifying, I'm glad you can make light of it!

I'm pretty bad about fly spray. I plan on feeding my girls garlic this summer. We usually use fly predators too. Roxy often wears a sheet, but it's mostly because it keeps her so nice and clean. Flies aren't a huge problem here. I do buy fly spray though, usually just the cheapest stuff. No need to spend a fortune on something that washes away.

    1. It is kind of hard not to laugh when the other person with you is practically rolling on the ground laughing!
I used the Smart Bug-Off one year for the horse I leased. . .didn't really work, but I may have started giving it to her too late. Let me know how the garlic works! I would do almost anything to keep those horse flies away (shudder).

  4. Wow, I've hung my shirt and bra on the saddle horn before, but never popped out of it. I would have died of embarrassment. I'm glad you were able to find the humor in it. :D

I use Absorbine UltraShield fly spray. I would love to go with something all natural (I do use a vinegar rinse after baths which helps deter flies), but my biggest reason for using fly spray is for the ticks!! We have so many of them and I'm super paranoid because I've had friends almost die of tick fever and both of my dogs have tick diseases (which are always dormant in the body and can flare up again at anytime). Ultrashield has permethrin and pyrethrins in it which are best for protecting against ticks. Also a little trivia permethrin is the man made version of pyrethrum. Pyrethrum is a natural insecticide made from a certain species of chrysanthemum. :)
