what's in a name blog hop

Hand Gallop asks us, What's in a name?
Shyloh didn't really come with a name. In fact, she went about a week without one since she was dropped off at the barn.
First day at the barn!
During that time, I got to know her. . . as much as she tried to avoid it. She refused to be caught, taking upwards of two hours and six people, she was head shy, jumpy, and had no real interest in people taking an interest in her. She actually went out of her way to steer clear of human contact.

So I spent some time thinking about a name for her, employed some friends to do the same thing. Then I spent the weekend at my dad's house. While I was there, we were throwing a bunch of names around and one name kept coming back. . .Shiloh or Shyloh or Chyloh.
That hair!
I decided to go with Shyloh, obviously. It fit her. And she completely ignored it. Even to this day, she may look up when I call her name, but usually grass or standing or anything is better than running towards me.

Later, after tracking down the few weeks after she came from the auction and before she came to me, I discovered that she was called Ginger and Pumpkin. Anything before the auction, I cannot find. I have no clue if she is registered, but I highly doubt it. I have no clue what farm she was born on, if she spent her whole life in Michigan or not, who her sire or dam are, siblings, nothing.
Her hair sure holds that curl from braids!
That doesn't really matter to me. Shy is mine. But I think it would be cool to know, to have a history. And if Shy ever got a show or registered name, it would be Miss Sassy Shyloh Templeton.

The name still fits her, even though her goofyness has really surfaced. She is shy around new people. She takes a while to warm up. But when she decides a person is okay, she is hilarious. I love it.

what's in a name blog hop

Another fun Blog Hop from L. Williams at Viva Carlos!

What is the story behind your blogname/url?

I started this blog when I made the decision to buy Shyloh in 2011. I didn't own her yet and she didn't have a name, so the URL is Adventures with a Horse at Blogspot. I had plenty of grand adventures planned for us, I mean, with the Haflinger I was leasing we did some fun things. Shy had other plans. . .

There was a issue with a lost Coggins, where I could not bring her to the barn until I had it back, so it took a few weeks to actually get Shy. And she still didn't have a name.

I tossed around a bunch of names for her, but none seemed right. I tried serious names, silly names, classic names. Nope. I actually called her the horse with no name for a while. . .
Shy's look. . .and that chewed up mane. Yuck!
But I eventually gave her a name that fit her. Not that it matters much, she rarely responds to her name, although she is getting better. Some times she will even look up when I call her.

Even though we have not had the kind of adventures that I thought we would be having, we have had some adventures, from accepting her head being touched to driving and showing and now on to riding (hopefully trails soon!).

I think the more generic title can keep the blog going if I get more Haflingers, too. :) Not all that interesting, but that is my story and I'm sticking to it.
ALL the Haflingers!

and we have a name!

Ta da!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was meant to be. I told Mike about that name a few days ago, but he didn't really like it because we know a dog named Cheyanne and they call her Chy. Then I mulled it over at my dad's house. They liked it, so I texted Mike and told him I really liked that name. When I walked into the barn today, Leslie said, what about Shyloh, because she is so shy? And so it goes. . .

I took Shy into the arena today and Robin showed me how to use the lunge whip and exercise her the right way. She wasn't on a line, but she was trotting and cantering. At one point she kicked up some ground and a stone hit the side of the arena and she spooked! She took off and did a mini buck, but then had no problem going back to the same area.

Mike showed up at the barn to see her, too! I swear, I always get the strangest animals. Every day I discover something new about her. She likes to lick. She will lick my hand, my arm, my shirt, the stall, whatever! I let her for now so she gets to know me and trust me. Leslie said I should put a sign on her paddock stating that she is in training and to only approach her with treats, so she comes to associate people with good things.

Ever see that movie 50 First Dates with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore? That's what I feel like with Shy. Each day, I have to regain her trust. I know, I know. . .I haven't even had her a week yet. But every time I go out there I spend a large amount of my time building trust. And that's okay.
